BACKGROUND TO FAWLEY
ExxonMobil operates the UK's largest refinery, at Fawley, near Southampton, and provides around 20 per cent of the UK's refining capacity. The Fawley chemical plant is highly integrated with the refinery, taking components from it to produce over a million tonnes of petrochemicals annually.
The refinery processes over 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day and supplies come from the North Sea, Europe and the Middle East. A full range of petroleum products are manufactured, including LPG, petrol, diesel, jet fuel, marine fuels, gas oil, kerosene, lubricant base stocks, fuel oil and bitumen.
ExxonMobil also operates the largest privately-owned underground oil pipeline distribution network in the UK - nearly 1,200 kilometres of pipeline. Some 85 per cent of refinery products are transported by pipeline from the Fawley refinery to distribution terminals at Hythe, Avonmouth, Birmingham, Manchester, West London and Purfleet. Pipelines also feed Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham airports. The remaining products go by sea, road and rail.
The Fawley chemical plant is the major European manufacturer of halobutyl rubber, used to line car tyres. Other products include Methyl Ethyl Ketone (used in paint and glue), ethylene (used in plastics manufacture), higher olefins (used in the manufacture of plasticizers and performance fuels), additives (used to enhance the qualities of fuels and lubricants) and energy chemicals (used in the production and refining of oil).
About 80 per cent of the chemical products produced are shipped either to customers overseas or to other ExxonMobil Chemical plants in Europe for further processing. Products for UK customers are mainly transported by ship to storage terminals, with additives and energy chemicals distributed by road.

BACKGROUND TO FIFE ETHYLENE PLANT
ExxonMobil’s Fife Ethylene Plant at Mossmorran is one of the largest in Europe, with an annual production capacity of 830,000 tonnes. The main production site is at Mossmorran, while storage and shipping facilities can be found at our Braefoot Bay marine terminal, four miles away.
Fife Ethylene Plant utilises North Sea natural gas liquids (NGLs) and gets its feedstock, ethane, from the adjacent Shell / ExxonMobil NGL plant, which in turn receives its feedstock from the SAGE gas processing plant at St Fergus, operated by another ExxonMobil company.
Half of the ethylene manufactured at the Fife Ethylene Plant is distributed using the UK ethylene pipeline network, via Grangemouth. The remainder goes to the marine terminal at Braefoot Bay, from where it is shipped as a refrigerated liquid to Antwerp and elsewhere in Europe.
